We usually don't know when our timing belt (most modern vehicles use belts instead of chains) will break. If you have an interference engine, your engine will continue turning but the camshaft will stop. If the valves are open and your engine is an interference engine, the piston will slam into the open valve and cause some very expensive damage and more than likely require a new engine. There is no way to tell without taking it off if a timing belt is about to break. Nine times out of ten if your car IS equipped with an interference engine then you will need a new engine. These can be very very costly and it is much more phesible to replace the timing belt (and water pump if it runs off the timing belt) according to manufacturers recommendatiions of 80,000 to 100,000 miles. A Timing Belt service can cost as much as 4-500$ but an engine can range into the thousands.
